Use this guide to quickly find the right size and hanging height for any light fixture — whether you're shopping for a chandelier, pendant, ceiling light, or wall sconce. All measurements assume a standard UAE residential ceiling height of 2.4–2.7 metres unless noted otherwise.

    Chandeliers

    Size by Room

Room Size (L × W) Chandelier Diameter Number of Lights
    Small room (3m × 3m) 50–60 cm 3–4
    Standard room (4m × 4m) 70–80 cm 4–6
    Large room (5m × 5m) 90–100 cm 6–8
    Open-plan (6m × 6m+) 100–130 cm 8–12+

Formula: Room length (m) + room width (m) = minimum chandelier diameter (cm). Always round up.

    Over a Dining Table

    Table Width Chandelier Width
    90 cm (36") 45–60 cm
    120 cm (48") 60–80 cm
    150 cm (60") 75–100 cm
    180 cm (72") 90–120 cm

Rule: Chandelier width = ½ to ⅔ of table width. For rectangular tables, the chandelier should be at least 30 cm narrower than the table on each side.

    Hanging Height

    Location Height
Over dining table 75–90 cm from tabletop to chandelier bottom
Open floor (no table below) Bottom at least 210 cm from floor
Over a bed At least 60 cm above headboard
Standard foyer (2.4–2.7m ceiling) Bottom at least 210 cm from floor
High foyer (2.7–3.5m ceiling) Fixture drop 50–70 cm; bottom at least 230 cm from floor
Double-height foyer (3.5m+) Bottom roughly aligned with the second-floor railing

    Ceiling Type Notes

    • Flat ceiling, under 2.7m: Use a semi-flush mount or compact chandelier with a short chain. Full chandelier will feel too low.
    • Flat ceiling, 2.7m+: Full chandelier works. Add 5–10 cm of drop for every 30 cm of ceiling height above 2.7m.
    • Sloped / cathedral ceiling: Fixture must include a sloped ceiling adapter or adjustable chain. Standard canopy mounts do not work on angled ceilings. Confirm before ordering.
    • Domed / recessed ceiling: Centre the chandelier within the dome, not below it.

    Pendant Lights

    Over a Kitchen Island

Island Length Number of Pendants Spacing
    Under 1.2m 1 Centred
    1.2–1.5m 2 Evenly spaced
1.5–2.5m 3 60–75 cm apart (centre to centre)
    2.5–3.5m 4–5 60–75 cm apart
3.5m+ 2 oversized pendants One at each end

    Over a Dining Table

    Table Length Number of Pendants
    Under 1.5m (2–4 seats) 1 centred pendant
    1.5–2.5m (4–6 seats) 2–3 pendants
2.5m+ (6–10 seats) 3–5 pendants or 1 oversized statement pendant

Pendant diameter should be roughly ⅓ to ½ the width of the surface below. Example: 90 cm wide island → 25–40 cm pendant diameter.

    Hanging Height

    Surface Height
Kitchen island / dining table 75–90 cm from countertop to pendant bottom
Island with bar stools 85–95 cm (prevents head-bumping)
Bedside (replacing table lamp) 30–45 cm above nightstand; 120–140 cm from floor
Bathroom vanity 190–210 cm from floor (bottom of pendant)

    • Sloped ceiling: Most flush mounts cannot be installed on a sloped ceiling. Semi-flush mounts may work with an angled adapter. Check product specs before ordering.
    • Low ceiling (under 2.3m): Use only flush mounts. Any drop will reduce headroom below safe clearance.
