    Screen glare is light reflecting off a monitor surface into your eyes. It forces your pupils to constrict (because of the bright reflection) while your eyes try to focus on the dimmer screen content. The constant micro-adjustments cause eye strain that builds over hours.

    Sources of screen glare in a home office, in order of how common they are:

    1. Window directly behind or in front of the monitor: The worst offender. Bright daylight behind the screen creates silhouette glare. A window in front of the screen reflects in the glossy display. Position the desk so windows sit to the side — perpendicular to the screen. Ideally, the window should be on your non-dominant side so you can use the natural light as task fill without it hitting the screen.

    Quick glare test: turn off your screen so it's a black rectangle. Look at the reflection. Every light source you see reflected in the dark screen is contributing to eye strain during the day. Reposition fixtures until the black screen shows zero direct reflections.

    Colour Temperature: Dialled for the Time of Day

    Colour temperature affects alertness. Cool white light (4000K–5000K) suppresses melatonin and keeps you alert — useful at 10 AM, counterproductive at 10 PM if you're trying to wind down after late work. Warm white light (2700K–3000K) signals relaxation — comfortable for evening reading but sleep-inducing during a 2 PM deadline push.

    If your home office serves a consistent daytime schedule (8 AM–6 PM), install fixed 3500K–4000K lighting and stop thinking about it. The slight cool bias supports focus without feeling clinical.

    If you work irregular hours or the office doubles as an evening reading room, invest in tunable-white fixtures.     Video Call Lighting: Because You're on Camera More Than You Think

    The home office light setup for desk work and the setup for looking decent on a video call are slightly different. Desk task lighting often casts unflattering upward or side shadows on the face. Video call lighting needs frontal, diffused light at face height.

    Three approaches, from simplest to most involved:

    1. Window as key light: Position your desk facing a window (window behind the camera, not behind you). Natural daylight is the most flattering light source available at zero cost. The trade-off: inconsistent brightness depending on weather and time of day.
    2. Ring light or small panel light behind the webcam: A compact LED panel mounted above or beside the monitor, aimed at your face. 4000K, dimmable, CRI 95. Mount it so the light hits your face at a slight downward angle — straight-on is too flat, too steep creates raccoon-eye shadows.
