Six months later, the 2,000 AED model has crystals clouding at the edges, gold plating wearing thin at the arm joints, and a slight wobble developing in the frame. The 12,000 AED model looks exactly as it did on delivery day.

Crystal Grades: What the Labels Actually Mean
The word "crystal" in the chandelier industry almost never means natural rock crystal (mined quartz). It refers to manufactured glass with specific optical properties. The grade determines clarity, refraction, weight, and price.

How to Spot K9 vs. Standard Glass in Person
Pick up a crystal drop or prism from the chandelier. Hold the edge against a white sheet of paper in natural daylight. Standard glass reveals a faint green line along the cut edge — the iron content in the silica base material. K9 crystal stays completely colourless. Tap it gently with your fingernail. K9 produces a clear, sustained ringing tone. Standard glass gives a dull click.
Harder to verify but equally telling: K9 crystal weighs noticeably more than standard glass of the same size. The lead content adds density. A genuine K9 chandelier arm dressed with six drops feels substantial in the hand. A glass-equivalent arm dressed with the same number of pieces feels noticeably lighter.
Marketing trick to watch for: "Crystal glass" and "crystalline" are made-up terms. They mean standard machine-pressed glass with no lead content. If the listing uses either phrase without specifying a crystal grade (K9, Egyptian, Asfour, Swarovski), assume it's plain glass dressed up in copywriting.
Frame Construction: Steel, Brass, and the Plating Layer That Hides Everything
The frame — the metal armature that holds the bulbs and crystals — is the structural backbone of a chandelier. A poorly built frame reveals itself within months as crystals start tilting, arms sag, and the entire fixture develops an asymmetrical lean.

Crystal Cutting: Machine-Pressed vs. Hand-Cut

Crystal components come in two manufacturing tiers: machine-pressed (molded) and hand-cut (ground and polished). The visual difference is sharpness of the facet edges and the complexity of the light pattern produced.
Machine-pressed crystals are formed in a mold under pressure. The mold creates the facet geometry in one operation. Edges are slightly rounded rather than razor-sharp because the glass flows into the mold corners with some radius. The sparkle pattern is softer and less prismatic. Most K9 chandeliers in the 2,000–5,000 AED range use machine-pressed components.
Hand-cut crystals start as a rough blank that a craftsman grinds against a wheel to create each facet individually, then polish. Facet edges are sharp, meeting at clean angles. Light enters the crystal and bounces between precisely flat internal surfaces, producing tight, brilliant flashes rather than a soft glow. The test: hold a crystal drop under a single bulb. Rotate it slowly. A hand-cut piece produces discrete, bright flashes as each facet catches the light. E14 (small Edison screw) is the standard chandelier socket across most of the market. Over a dining table: The bottom of the chandelier should hang 30 to 36 inches above the tabletop. This is lower than walking clearance, acceptable because nobody walks through the table. For double-height entries and stairwells: Crystal chandeliers with 3, 4, or 5+ tiers can extend 8 to 15 feet. The practical limit is your ceiling height minus 12 inches of clearance at the top and a bottom that doesn't obstruct sightlines from the entry door.
